College Ball

The College Ball was held on Friday 7 June at The Hyatt. The students looked fantastic, and a great time was had by all. Many thanks to Ben Grose and Craig Rodgers for their organisation.

Domestic Violence

I am sure that you would be well aware, that the scourge of domestic violence has been prominent in the public arena, in political circles and in the press.

There is barely a week that goes by when a victim of domestic violence is murdered, and daily we read of other examples of domestic violence where women (almost always), are attacked and injured by abusive and controlling partners.

It is difficult to know how to respond, other than to take our position that violence, anger and control, do not solve our problems.

We endeavour to impart a message of non-violence amongst our students, and I would encourage you to discuss domestic violence with your children.

Staff

Kerri Hilton is leaving at the end of this term.
Aine Meally has left to return home to Ireland for family reasons.
Tanya Evans has joined the teaching staff, having completed her studies.

Year 9- Adventure Days at Bickley Recreation Camp

The picturesque Bickley Recreation Camp recently played host to our enthusiastic Year 9 students for their Activity Days. Amidst the lush greenery and crisp air, the students embraced team-building activities that challenged both body and mind.

Read More qxif-angle-right

The students took part in a wide range of team building activities which the students enjoyed immensely. The activities provided the group with a great opportunity to hone their communication and cooperation skills. Whilst relying on their peers for support, as well as discovering the importance of trust and collaboration.

The students put their engineering prowess to the test by constructing rafts using planks, ropes, plastic water containers, and sheer determination. Laughter echoed as makeshift vessels floated—or sometimes sank—across the water. Through trial and error, they learned that innovation and teamwork are essential for success.

Our Year 9 cohort embraced these challenges with boundless energy. Their laughter echoed across the valley, and their determination willingness to have a go was contagious. Whether scaling ropes or constructing rafts, they demonstrated resilience, adaptability, and a true sense of camaraderie.

The Year 9 Adventure Days at Bickley Recreation Camp will undoubtedly remain etched in their minds as a highlight of the year so far.

A Night to Remember: Year 11 & 12 Senior Ball at Hyatt Regency Perth

The Hyatt Regency Perth set the stage for an unforgettable evening—the Year 11 & 12 Senior Ball. Dressed to impress, our students stepped into a world of elegance and celebration.

As the sun dipped below the Swan River, the students arrived in a dazzling array of gowns, dresses, suits, and tuxedos. The ballroom buzzed with excitement as friends and classmates admired each other’s impeccable style.

The buffet spread was a feast for the senses, the students indulged, savouring every bite. The culinary delights matched the grandeur of the occasion.

After dinner the ballroom transformed into a dance floor, were the students busted a move to a wide variety of music. Our seniors danced with abandon.

Year 12 Retreat

At the end of last term, our Year 12 students embarked on their Year 12 Retreat, an experience many will not forget. On Wednesday, 20 March, 120 Year 12 students and 11 staff members left the College for Fairbridge Village, Pinjarra. While most students were filled with excitement, some felt trepidation about what to expect over the next three days.

The aim of the Retreat was to provide students with opportunities for personal reflection, engage in large group sessions with staff presentations, and participate in small group discussions on topics such as self, others, and their own spirituality. Throughout the retreat, students had opportunities to connect with their peers and teachers during sessions, meal times, and free time.

Feedback from students indicated that this experience gave them new insights into their peers. They expressed gratitude to those who generously shared their experiences in both large and small groups.

On behalf of the Graduating Class of 2024, we would like to thank Mr Rodger, Mr O’Brien, Mr Mullin, Mr O’Neill, Mr Bettella, Mrs Knowles, Ms Tipene-Grace, Miss Girando, Miss Monisse, and Miss Donaldson for providing the Year 12 students with this special opportunity to step away from their daily routines.

Year 8 Retreat

The theme of our Year 8 Retreat, 'In the Footsteps of the Mercy Sisters,' allowed students to retrace the steps of Mother Ursula Frayne and the pioneer sisters who arrived in January 1846. The day included walking along the banks of the Swan River, recalling the challenges faced by the early Sisters in the Swan River Colony. Students also participated in the Amazing Mercy Race, unlocking clues to significant places in the city related to Ursula and the sisters. The day concluded with a tour of Mercedes College, the oldest Mercy school in Australia, and home to the original Mercy convent.

Year 8 students found this retreat an opportunity to reflect on the hardships faced by the sisters in their early days. Many admired the resilience of the sisters and considered how they might apply these lessons to their own lives.

On behalf of the Year 8 students and myself, I would like to thank Mrs Vedette Lendich (Mercedes College), Mrs Knowles, Miss Girando, Miss Donaldson, Sr Vicky, and Mr O’Neill for their guidance during the retreat.

Year 9 Retreat

The Year 9 Retreat, themed 'In the Footsteps of the Christian Brothers', allowed students to explore the story of Blessed Edmund Rice and the Christian Brothers. Students journeyed from Aquinas College along the banks of the Canning River to Clontarf Aboriginal College, learning about the life and charism of Blessed Edmund Rice and the Christian Brothers.

Upon arriving at Clontarf Aboriginal College, students explored the grounds, including the beautiful chapel, and learned about the life of a Christian Brother from Br Rod Ellyard and Br Terry Casey.

On behalf of the Year 9 students and myself, I would like to thank Br Rod, Br Terry, Miss Girando, Miss Donaldson, Sr Vicky, and Mr Mullin for their time and guidance during the retreat.

Seeds of Justice Conference 2024

On 9 May, five of our Year 10 students attended the annual Seeds of Justice Conference. The Seeds of Justice program provides students in Mercy-sponsored and Mercy-affiliated schools with opportunities to:

  • Form students and staff in the Mercy charism
  • Raise awareness of contemporary social justice issues
  • Facilitate new connections between students and staff of Western Australian Mercy schools

This year, students from Aranmore Catholic College, Santa Maria College, St Brigid’s College, Mercedes College, Mercy College, and Ursula Frayne Catholic College gathered at St Brigid’s College, Lesmurdie. The theme for this year's conference was 'Breaking Chains – Empowered to Respond to Modern-Day Slavery', aligning with the Sisters of Mercy’s concerns about immigration and women. Students gained a deeper understanding of modern slavery, who is impacted, and how to support victims. We thank our keynote speaker, Deacon Greg Lowe from The West Australian Migrant and Refugee Office, for providing students with the foundation to develop their Seeds of Justice awareness campaigns.

Archbishop’s LifeLink Launch 2024

On 16 May, the College hosted the Archbishop's annual LifeLink Launch. LifeLink is a recognisable entity encompassing all individual welfare and social service agencies supported by the Catholic Church in the Archdiocese of Perth. Schools are asked to fundraise for these agencies throughout the year. 2024 marks the 25th Anniversary of the inaugural LifeLink Day, with all schools receiving a thank-you plaque for their generosity.

Throughout the day, representatives from 28 schools listened to keynote speakers, participated in activities, and engaged in a panel discussion with Archbishop Timothy Costelloe, Bishop Donald Sproxton, Fr Vincent Glynn, and Deacon Mark Powell.

ANZAC Day Service – Axford Park

Our long-running commitment and relationship with The City of Vincent and the Returned Services League of Western Australian Mount Hawthorn Sub-Branch continued this year for ANZAC Day. Our College choir was invited to sing both the Australian and New Zealand National Anthems, and our Head Boy and Girl, Tamarangi Tunui and Mia Pappas, participated in the service. As always, the choir sang beautifully and received commendations from attendees.

Special thanks to Ms Lizzie Hille, Mr Ciaran Mullin, and Mrs Coralie Kahn for preparing the choir, and to all the staff who attended.

Academic Extension Program (AEP) News

Broomstick Challenge

Year 7 and 8 AEP students investigated variables allowing some individuals to be more likely to successfully complete the viral 'Broomstick Challenge'.

Read More qxif-angle-right

This challenge requires individuals to hold a broomstick towards the ground with both hands and step over with both feet without letting go or losing balance. From the 45 students tested, they concluded that gender did not appear to play a role in the ability to complete the challenge, neither did shoe length. There was, however, a difference in age with younger students more capable of success than older students. Students agreed that flexibility was a potential variable to explore in the future.

Music

The school choir delivered a moving performance of both the Australian and New Zealand National Anthems at the ANZAC Day ceremony in Mount Hawthorn, paying tribute to our fallen heroes. Their singing added a profound emotional depth to the event.

Our Certificate II students in Year 11 and 12 had the opportunity to visit the live music venue Night Owl, experiencing first-hand the dynamics of live performances and sound engineering. They filmed a music video of their chosen band pieces. This excursion offered valuable insights into the music industry and inspired many students to pursue their musical interests further.

We would like to make special mention of our newly donated Yamaha piano that was premiered at the Recital Evening in Week 9. This was generously donated by Wendy and Mansu from the Rotary Club Perth. Its life before Aranmore was at the Parmelia Hilton Hotel where it was used for sing along sessions for gents from the Rotary for many a decade. We look forward to continuing its life here at the College for many students to practice and perform on.

Our Music Department hosted a recital evening for students from Years 7 to 12 in Mercy Hall, showcasing their musical talents. The event featured solo and group performances across various instruments, with standout pieces from junior and senior students alike. It was an enormous success and showcased the incredible talent and diversity of the College.

Drama

The Drama Department’s performance of Agatha Christie’s A Murder is Announced was a highlight of the term. The production, held over several evenings, captivated audiences with its suspenseful plot and stellar performances. The dedication and hard work of the cast and crew were evident in every aspect of the show.

Drama students had the chance to attend a professional production of A Doll’s House 2. This excursion provided students with a deeper understanding of contemporary theater and performance techniques. The experience was both educational and inspiring, sparking lively discussions and new ideas among the students.

Media

The Year 9 Media class visited the Channel 9 news studios, offering them a behind-the-scenes look at how a news broadcast is produced. Students observed live broadcasts, explored the control rooms, and interacted with news professionals. This hands-on experience provided invaluable insights into the world of media and journalism.

Visual Arts

Senior Visual Art students completed impressive projects focusing on self-portraiture and food. The self-portraits showcased a range of styles and techniques, reflecting the unique personalities and artistic skills of the students. The food-themed paintings were equally remarkable, capturing the texture, color, and beauty of various culinary subjects. Some of these completed works will be displayed at next year’s Combined Arts Exhibition, so stay tuned!

Congratulations to everyone involved for a fantastic term. Let’s continue to celebrate and nurture the extraordinary talent within our school community!

11 General English – Harmony Week Exchange with IEC 1 Students:

At the end of Term 1, a group of our Year 11 General students headed over to Ms Phong’s IEC 1 classroom to share some cross-cultural conversation and morning tea to celebrate Harmony Week. Ms Phong’s students came from a variety of countries including Afghanistan, Syria, Rwanda, Thailand, Burma and El Salvador, and had some interesting stories to share with our Year 11s. The students enjoyed learning about each other’s cultures, as well as sharing some popular teenage slang words from their countries. All the students enjoyed an “Aussie” morning tea spread with food such as Tim Tams and Vegemite Shapes, as well as enjoying some homemade delicacies kindly supplied by some of the IEC students. (Mrs Kerry Ponton)

Literature Excursion to the Theatre: A Midsummer Night’s Dream:

At the start of Term 2, the Year 11 and 12 Literature students attended the Bell Shakespeare performance of A Midsummer Night's Dream by William Shakespeare at the Heath Ledger Theatre. Set in a magical forest, the play tells the story of a group of fairies who tamper with the lives and minds of a group of humans.

We all really enjoyed the performance. The stage design was dynamic and intriguing, and the actors did an amazing job at embodying their characters, leaving us fully immersed by their performance.

Next term in Literature, the Year 12s will be studying Othello and the Year 11s will be studying Macbeth. This excursion was beneficial for our class as it allowed us to see a drama text brought to life. It was beneficial to see the various dramatic techniques in action as well as hear Shakespeare's language. (Miss Sophie Monisse)

Young Writers Term 2:

Term 2 saw the next instalment of the Young Writers’ Collective program for our budding Year 9 and 10 creative writers. This extension program occurs once a term at the Fremantle Literature Centre, and sessions are run by visiting Australian authors from various young adult genres. This term our students had the opportunity to join in a highly engaging poetry workshop run by young WA writer, editor and educator Madison (Maddie) Godfrey. (Mrs Kerry Ponton)

Year 7 English – How To Bee:

To compliment their study of the novel How To Bee, by Bren MacDibble, the Year 7 English students participated in various fun activities to celebrate World Bee Day. After watching a short video about creating friendly habitats for native bees, the students made their own beeswax candles, learnt about bee hotels, and tried some local honey. These activities were kindly organised by one of our Year 7 English teachers, Ms Jessica Hopkins. (Mrs Kerry Ponton)

School Production Matinee Audience – Year 10 Level 3:

Early in the term, our Level 3 students were invited to join the audience for the matinee dress rehearsal of school production A Murder Is Announced. They joined special guests from the Mercy Sisters and Christian Brothers across Perth. As well as being treated to some top-class entertainment, they also received snack packs, and goodie bags with treats and a show program. The students engaged brilliantly with the play, reacting with great enthusiasm in all the right places. A few of their reviews are printed here:

"The entire time I was on the edge of my seat, waiting for what would happen next. I am very grateful to have been invited to watch the play." (Kimberley)

"I loved the play, the acting was done really well. One thing you have to do is pay attention to all the details because it had me and one of my friends turning into a little detective ourselves. Overall the play was done perfectly and I would love to watch it again." (Aaliyah)

These replicas were then displayed in classrooms with each Year 7 class, plus some special guests, having the opportunity to view the work. Well done Year 7s! - Mrs Lesley O'Connor, HASS Teacher

International Student News

It has been another busy term for the international students. International students often start at different times of the year at the College, as they are busy obtaining Visas and completing English tests before arriving in Australia. This term, the College welcomed four new international students, hailing from Vietnam, China (x2) and Iran!

Read More qxif-angle-right

These students must quickly navigate life in a new country as well as start school in already established classrooms. These students have shown much growth and confidence as the 11 weeks passed, and settled in seamlessly thanks to other students and teachers who have taken time to answer questions and help these new students settle. Thank you!

Term 2, students also enjoyed several out of school activities such as the School ball, Brazil party at Curtin Stadium, the Augstudy Careers Expo in Northbridge as well as the being invited to participate in the international student Carlton Ritz Job Connect Program. All these programs allow for students to experience opportunities outside of the classroom. The Job Connect Program is particularly unique, as it provides 3 days of exposure in the hospitality sector, which will be useful as students often work in hospitality part time during their studies.

Finally, we are sad to farewell five of the exchange students who have studied at the school in Term 1 and 2. They have made a big impact during their short time with us! Exchange students, Felipe, Joao, Artur and Davi, in addition to Dori will be returning home after 6 months to Brazil and US respectively. They have had the opportunity to improve their English, explore beautiful Perth and WA, and I know they will have many stories to share with family and friends at home about Aranmore and Australia.

Some thoughts about Australia and Aranmore from your Year 8 and 10 students:

Things I enjoy about Australia...

''Nice environment, quiet, friendly people, nature (beaches and trees), weather is great, people are kind, modern facilities, variety of people''

Things I enjoy about Aranmore...

‘’the teachers are friendly and so cute’’
‘’teachers and friends’’ ‘’friendly teachers, friendly friends’’
‘’finishing earlier than China’’
‘’wide range of different cultures at the school’’

Thank you all again for your support and special care for these students.

The boys’ basketball team made history by reaching the quarter-finals of the ACC Championship. Facing tough competition from John Septimus Roe, a renowned basketball school, our team played exceptionally well. Led by captain Jude Grabenis, they showcased their talent and teamwork, achieving the furthest advancement in this prestigious tournament.

Interschool Cross Country

Our cross country team performed admirably, finishing 32nd out of 78 schools. With over 400 runners in each race, the competition was fierce. Notable individual results include Caian Steadman, Amine Teklemariam, Nawidullah Alizada, and Harper Ngarotata-Day who all finished in the top 100. We’re proud of their dedication and resilience.

Year 7 AFL Carnival

For many students, the Year 7 AFL Carnival marked their first experience with Australian Rules Football. Their enthusiasm and effort were commendable. Aranmore students received a special mention for their outstanding attitudes and performance on the day. Well done, Year 7s!

Boys ACC Championship Soccer

Our senior boys’ soccer team has exceeded expectations, progressing further than ever before in the ACC Championship. Currently in the round of 16, they aim to go all the way. Coaches O’Neill and Bettella have strategically guided the team, and stars like Fabrice Feruzi Kikuni, Gabriel Kelly, and  Captain Lucas Kelly have shone on the field.

Keep an eye out in Term 3 for the team’s next game!
