PRINCIPAL'S MESSAGE
China Visit
I recently travelled to China with Casey Deng, our International Student Coordinator, to meet families who may be interested in sending their students to our College. This is something I have done previously, although the border has been closed in recent times. I was quite amazed by the improvement in air quality, in the large Chinese cities, since my last visit.
I asked some of the locals as to the reason for this change, and they pointed out that 60% of vehicles on Chinese roads are now electric. It is a fantastic achievement to turn things around so markedly, in such a short space of time. Hopefully, the Chinese will be able to supply vehicles to the rest of the world affordably, so that we can also reduce our emissions.
Harmony Day
The College has had a number of Harmony Week activities to celebrate Harmony Day. Our College is really quite a beacon, and an example to other communities as to how well different groups and cultures, can integrate. We do not accept or condone racism at our school. We don’t always get it right, but we usually do admirably well.
College Production
Early in Term 2, the College will be putting on the play 'A Murder is Announced', an adaptation of the Agatha Christie novel of the same name. Our young actors, Arts staff and volunteers have been busy rehearsing and getting the show ready for its debut on the CASS stage. Because of the twists and turns of the play, it is more suited to an older audience, making it perfect for families with older children or grandparents who would enjoy a night out at the theatre. Tickets are available here.
Easter
Currently our Muslim students are fasting during the time of Ramadan in preparation for Eid. We wish them every blessing during this time. Those in the Christian tradition are also preparing for Easter, after the journey through Lent. Lent is a time of fasting, prayer and charity, which is also the case in Muslim tradition.
I wish all our families a holy and restful easter break over the school holidays.

Academic Extension Program (AEP) News
Our Year 7 and 8 AEP students competed in the da Vinci Decathlon at UWA in early March along with approximately 30 other teams from schools in Western Australia. Experiences like this help build resilience, teamwork and a competitive spirit in students so thank you students for your hard work, thank you parents for your support and thank you to staff who covered classes and provided admin support.
Mrs Geogeghan and I were extremely proud of how the students represented our College through their determination, cooperation and friendliness toward fellow competitors and staff alike. Results of the day are yet to be received. Being able to compare how competitive we were against other schools also provides another learning/skills building opportunity; the ability to assess, reflect and develop strategies to do even better next year!

Arts & Technologies News
What a busy start to the year we’ve had so far! Preparations are well underway for this year’s Production, A Murder is Announced, with the Visual Arts, Design and Technology and Drama learning areas all getting involved in various ways. Our sets and props are coming together, thanks to our amazing staff and generous donations from the Aranmore Community. Rehearsals are underway and the buzz of excitement is starting to build as we head towards next term.
Visual Arts has been lucky to have two great workshops by accomplished visiting artists Rachelle Dusting and Will Huntley this term. These have allowed students to develop their technical skills in drawing and painting. We can’t wait to see their finished artworks later in the year.
Music has been as busy as ever, with ongoing rehearsals, and the recent visit to the Perspectives Performing Arts excursion. At this excursion, students were able to experience the diversity and quality of work in both Music and Drama performances by students from all over the metro area.
This term saw some of our lucky Food classes visit restaurants in the Leederville area for the Local Foods of Leederville excursion. Students were treated to a delicious burger and were able to find out a bit more about how food is produced, marketed and sold.
Keep tuned for more exciting events and photos next term as we head into full Production mode for A Murder is Announced!

Young Writers:
The Young Writers’ Collective programme is up and running again in 2024 for budding Year 9 and 10 creative writers. This is an extension programme offered once a term by the Fremantle Literature Centre, and sessions are run by visiting Australian authors from various young adult genres. Students have the opportunity to attend workshops at the Centre, which is housed in the grounds of the historic Fremantle Prison.
In Week 6, twelve Aranmore students headed out to join students from other schools in a full-day session run by Western Australian author Brendan Ritchie. His genres are mainly dystopia and climate fiction, which are very popular with our teenage readers. Upcoming sessions include workshops by poet Maddie Godfrey, Aboriginal novelist Jared Thomas, and graphic novelist Shane McCarthy.
Novus Lux:
Each year, the English Teachers’ Association of WA publishes Novus Lux an anthology of poetry and creative writing by emerging writers in Years 7-9 Statewide. All entrants receive a certificate of participation, but not every entry is published. Two of our current Year 8 students, Blake Allen and Brock Donaldson, submitted poems in Year 7 that were judged as good enough to be included in the latest anthology.
Blake submitted a rugby-themed limerick, The Father and Son from Hamilton. Brock had TWO poems included - a limerick entitled The Dogs on the Farm and another short piece called The Fog.
Both boys will be presented with a certificate and their copy of Novus Lux 2023. They should be very proud of their efforts.
All would-be poets or short story writers in Years 7 to 9 are encouraged to speak to their English teachers about submitting work for the 2024 edition. Winners in each category receive a $200 book voucher, with a $100 voucher awarded to runners-up. Entries close September 20.
Speedcubers
Our Year 8 English classes started the year studying the 2020 Netflix documentary Speedcubers and they were all inspired and captivated by its themes of friendship and being a good sport, as well as the amazing skill and dexterity shown by competitive Rubik’s cubers. They enjoyed playing with the cubes in class as they viewed, trying to solve a cube in the fastest time, and realising that it was not as easy as the documentary made it appear!

International Students News
In Term 1, the College welcomed over 10 new international students. We are lucky to have such an interesting and varied group of students from so many different countries come to Perth to study with us. These countries range from Thailand to Brazil, from Japan to Chile, Vietnam and Hong Kong! These students bring with them their unique stories and experiences to the College and to the classrooms.
At the start of the school year, all international students were invited to meet Mr Tanham, where students tried some Australian delicacies like vegemite and lamingtons and Bundaberg ginger beer. The ginger beer was a hit, vegemite less so.
In Week 4, students were also excited to be invited to a Welcome to Perth event hosted by Study Perth. Students first visited the City Library, saw the extensive facilities on offer for students as well as a large array of books they could borrow, and then spent the afternoon at the beautiful gardens where other students and host families joined forces for a picnic. Perhaps the highlight was the sleeping Koala, which did not wake up even with a stream of students coming for pats, and the endless fairy floss
Finally, Lisa Dang in Year 11 who has been selected to be one of the three school ambassadors for Study Perth for this year. She will have the chance to work with students from other schools and universities in this role, to promote international study in Perth as well as share her own experiences. Congratulations!

Ministry News
The start of the 2024 school year has been a busy one in the world of ministry, with many events including Shrove Tuesday, Ash Wednesday, Year Group Parish Masses, the Year 7 Retreat and the Year 12 Retreat. Many of the events listed would not have been possible without the support of our social justice leaders and many staff.
Shrove Tuesday
Our first big event of the term was our Shrove Tuesday pancake fundraiser. Our Social Justice Leaders spearheaded this event, by making 200 pancakes and selling them at recess. Students enjoyed pancakes with various toppings and we managed to raise over $130 to kick start our Caritas Project Compassion Fundraising for 2024.
Ash Wednesday
This term we have also had several opportunities to engage with liturgical celebrations, the most notable being our Ash Wednesday/ Opening School Mass. This was a beautiful celebration that commemorated the beginning of the Lenten Season and Fr Elias reminded us of the importance of fasting, prayer and almsgiving during this time.
Year 7 Retreat
On Friday 8 March, the Year 7s journeyed along the coast from Whitford Nodes to Trigg Beach for the Year 7 Retreat. The theme of this retreat is coming to know the person of Jesus. Along our journey we stopped and reflected on the many messages that Jesus shared with his disciples. Although we encountered questionable weather throughout the day, it was a great day which gave the Year 7s an opportunity to bond and get to know their Form and RE Teachers better. The day culminated with a BBQ lunch cooked Mr Battistessa and Mrs Russell and some touch rugby. A big thank you to all the staff involved in the day, Mr Holdaway, Sr Vicky, Ms Donaldson, Mrs Robert, Ms Grace, Ms Culnane, Mr Ranasooriya & Mr Lewis.

Netball News
Welcome Ms Culnane!
The Specialised Netball Program (together with the PE Department) would like to warmly welcome our newest member, Ms Riley Culnane. Ms Culnane has a wealth of netball experience from playing for her beloved Busselton town in her youngest days, through WA Netball League with the Souwest Jets and excelling in under aged Australian Squads/Teams.
Ms Culnane comes to us a Honours Graduate from Notre Dame University, and graduated top of her class. Her love for teaching and sport, in particular netball, motivates Ms Culnane to get students to share that passion.
Ms Major, has taken on more Outdoor Education classes this year, though she is still very keenly involved in our program and will be coaching at some of our upcoming netball events. Thank you Ms Major!
Specialised Netball Tournament – aka Aranmore Cup – Friday 22 March, 2024
Our annual tournament that we host was finally back, after a COVID-induced hiatus. Aranmore coordinates a large participation carnival for schools that run a netball program or have a special interest in netball and have fondly named the tournament the ‘Aranmore Cup’. On Friday 22 March, six other schools brought multiple teams, and joined us at Kingsway outdoor courts to put their netball skills and knowledge into practice. It was a great day – although a bit hot – the students got to run, jump, throw and shoot to their heart's content!
For our Year 10s, as part of their netball course, they carried out the off-court roles of coaching, umpiring and managing. The students worked together with peers to provide our younger netballers with an opportunity to play the game they love and gain some feedback and insights from the older, more experienced specialised netballers.
At Aranmore, we aim to develop our netballers with an all-round capacity and this experience certainly challenged the Year 10s to expand their skills in all the off-court roles.
Our Year 7s, 8s and 9s took their first chances to play together in their year groups and at times challenged themselves by playing in multiple positions. Some girls discovered they had skills set for positions they didn’t realise they had.
I want to commend all our Netballers for the way they participated to the best of their ability, all the while showing great integrity and honouring the ‘spirit’ of our inclusive game.
Netball WA’s HUB DAY for Tier 1 Endorsed Schools – Wednesday 27 March, 2024
As a result of our Tier 1 Endorsement with Netball WA, we get to participate in exclusive skills sessions, delivered by highly qualified coaches. West Coast Fever players will be in attendance to assist players with the content of the sessions.
This year, Netball WA have targeted Year 9s for the opportunity and only a small group of 10 players are selected to attend. The aim is to give players the greatest opportunity to further develop their skills, extend their knowledge in a challenging environment.
Netball WA’s athlete development personnel were in and around the courts on the day and were on the look out for talented players to identify. The day is a great opportunity, and the selected players should appreciate the privilege to be a part of it.
CONGRATULATIONS – Three Netballers gain State Squad selection
Three of our netballers have excelled at the recent 15U State Schoolgirl trials. Over three hundred trialists commenced selections and were ‘cut’ down in numbers over the course of two days of match play. A group of 35 players were decided on to form the Training Squad… BIG congratulations to Milly Bagley (Yr 10), Loyola Vaauli (Yr 9) and Sapphire McLeod (Yr 9) on their selection. Milly, Loy and Sapphire are great netballers and equally great people and we wish them all the best as they head into Squad training sessions over the next month. The aim is now is to gain selection into the final team of 12 players, and to travel interstate to represent Western Australia at Nationals.
Good Luck: WA THUNDER Netball Teams!
On behalf of the Specialised Netball Program, we would like to wish the following people the very best for their upcoming Nationals, when they all represent WA Thunder at the Australian Men’s (and Mixed) National Championships in Brisbane over Easter.
In the 20U Men’s Team:

Science News
The Science department has begun the year in our usual busy manner, full of experiments, excursions, dissections and interesting explanations for everyday phenomena.
Aranmore students’ science education is safe in the capable hands of our long-standing staff such as Mr Lafferty, Dr Carroll, Mr Halden, Mr Eglington, Mr Miotti, Miss Cerny and Miss Donaldson. We also welcome Mr Ranasooriya & Mr Simpson (pictured) to the department and welcome back Mrs Hopkins.
Below are just a sample of some of the things that happened this term – there is just way too much going on for us to be able to take photos of it all!
WEEK 9
Year 11 General Human Biology Bone Dissection
When you first think of bone you may think of a solid white object, however, there is much more to be learnt about the structure of bones. General Human Biology students were given the opportunity to dissect a bone to see first-hand the features they have been learning about in class, providing excellent preparation for their upcoming test.
Year 10 Studying for Tests
The last week of term is always full of tests and assessments. While the majority of study for final tests is expected to happen at home, time is given in class for students to complete their study and to ask their teachers any questions. In younger years, this study is directed with revision sheets and specific tasks. As students get older, especially in extension or ATAR classes, the study is more self-driven with students encouraged to go over their notes and text and to complete questions suitable to their level of understanding from the text or other resources provided.
Here Mr Halden’s Year 10 classes are preparing for their Biology test the following day.
Blood Typing Year 9 Forensics and Year 11 ATAR Human Biology
How can you tell what blood type someone is? How can this information be used to solve crimes? Thank you to Curtin Outreach for teaching Year 9 Forensic and Year 11 Human Biology students all about blood typing and its forensic uses.
WEEK 8
Year 7 Dissolving
Beginning high school brings a lot of new challenges for our Year 7s. Juggling a variety of different teachers, assessments and expectations are some of them. To help reduce the amount of stress at this early stage, first summative assessments have been staggered between the learning areas. Summative assessments are those that are marked and go towards a student’s grade.
Here they are doing the practical part of their first summative assessment for Science – an experiment looking at how surface area affects the rate of dissolving. Science teachers are looking forward to marking this work and seeing how much students have improved since submitting their M&M formative assessment and receiving feedback.
Year 11 General Human Biology – Bones
One of the advantages of being at a school with such a long tradition is the variety of different items that can be found in the Science prep area. Here Year 11 General Human Biology students are observing the features of different human bones – using real human bones.
Year 11 ATAR Human Biology – Heart Dissection
Sheep hearts are very similar in size and proportions to a small adult heart. Dissections are always the highlight of Human Biology classes and allow students to understand heart structure in a way that videos and pictures just don’t allow.
Year 10 & 11 Chemistry – Mole Olympics
Thank you once again to Murdoch Outreach for coming to Aranmore to host the annual Mole Olympics. Year 10 and 11 Chemistry students get to have fun and compete against each other while deepening their understanding of stoichiometry.
WEEK 7:
Year 12 Chemistry – Titrations
We have had so much fun doing titration in chemistry class recently. Dr C encourages us to research and learn rather than just telling us the answers which has been good preparation for the practical assessment. - Estella Gillam
Year 10 – Rates of Reactions
There are many factors that can affect the speed of a chemical reaction. Here Year 10s are investigating how the concentration of substrates affects the rates of reaction. This investigation was part of their preparation for an upcoming assessment.
Year 11 Chemistry Separation
Today in chemistry, we were trying to separate a mixture of charcoal and sodium chloride into its pure components. We put the mixture over a Bunsen burner to evaporate until small crystals formed from the evaporated solution. - Elias Baker
Year 7 – Suspensions
Year 7s have been keeping our Lab Tech Biji busy with the many experiments they have been conducting this term. Here you can see Year 7s demonstrating the difference between a solution and a suspension.
Year 10 – Concentration
My Year 10 Science class were conducting an experiment to see the effect of concentration on reaction rate.
The students reacted concentrated (1M) Sodium Thiosulfate with Hydrochloric Acid and repeated the experiment again with diluted (0.1M) Sodium Thiosulfate, recording the time it took to turn a milky white colour. The students discovered that the concentrated solution turned a milky white colour in less than 5 seconds while the dilute solution took approximately 25 seconds to turn a milky white colour. - Mrs Hopkins
WEEK 5
Year 7 Melting Point
Did you know that the Celsius scale is based on the melting and boiling points of water? Year 7s do? Did you know that you can alter the melting and boiling points of water? Year 7s do. Here Year 7s are demonstrating the change of melting point with the addition of salt to ice cubes. Students found that pure water will melt at 0oC, but adding salt causes the ice to melt at a lower temperature, in this case between -8oC and -6oC .
Year 11 General Human Biology - Weetbix Challenge
Congratulations Jahlia – the winner of the annual weetbix challenge. Thank you also to those who didn’t win - demonstrating that saliva is required for swallowing.
WEEK 4
Year 7 Evaporation
Year 7s are practising their newly acquired Bunsen burner skills to demonstrate evaporation.
Year 9 Waves
The study of Geology includes the study of earthquakes. Earthquakes are waves of energy moving through the ground so an understanding of wave motion is required to understand seismic waves. Year 9 students will use this knowledge to study Tsunami’s and the effect seismic wave frequency has on damage to different sized buildings.
WEEK 3
GEHBY - Microscopes
General Human Biology has a focus on the practical and everyday aspects of human biology. Here the Year 11 General Human Biology class are practicing their microscope technique ready for their first practical assessment.
AEHBY – Surface Area
Cells are the basis of the human body, as they are for all living things. Year 11 Human Biologists are demonstrating why cells are so small using different sized agar cubes as models.
Year 12 Chemistry – Equilibrium
Year 12 Chemistry students are demonstrating La Chateliers principle in preparation for their first summative assessment.
Year 7 Slime
Year 7s are learning about matter and how they change state due to physical or chemical changes. Students had the opportunity to make slime in Week 3 and observe these changes occur while the weather was nice outside and not too hot. Throughout the term, students will learn about physical and chemical properties of substances, solubility, density and solutions.
Year 7 Bunsen Burner licences
Bunsen burner licences are a right of passage for Year 7 Science students. Students need to demonstrate their knowledge of how the burners work and all the procedures required to operate them safely.
WEEK 2
AEHBY - Playdough
Year 11 Human Biology are preparing for their first assessment using playdough to create cells of different sizes and compare their surface area to volume ratio.
Year 7 Thermometers
Year 7 students are continuing to build their familiarity with scientific equipment by learning the correct way to use a thermometer and take temperature. They were also pretty happy to learn that the International System of units is based on the metric system which they are already familiar with.
AEGHBY – Microscopes
Recent changes to the syllabus means that General Human Biology is more of a practical subject than ever. The Year 11 classes honed their microscope skills in preparation for their first practical assessment.

Thank You - Alumni News
Last week, I cycled 700km in the Hawaiian Ride for Youth to support young Western Australians experiencing mental health challenges. It was a huge personal challenge but one that was worth it, because right now suicide is the leading cause of death for young people aged between 15 and 24 in Australia.
I chose to take on this challenge because mental health has never been more important.
On the journey, we visited 15 schools in total and started important conversations with students about positive mental health.
It was our goal to increase awareness of youth mental health and raise funds to help Youth Focus deliver life-changing mental health support to our young Western Australians.
To those of you who have supported me - THANK YOU! We’ve now raised over $2 million.
And for anyone who is yet to donate, it's not too late to sponsor me and help change young lives.
