We completed last term with the NAIDOC Assembly which was very successful, and we also had the opportunity at that assembly to welcome back Ayor Chuot MP, an ex-student of the College. Ayor spoke to the students about the importance of education and the support that her family received when they arrived in Australia from Sudan, as refugees.

The staff began the term with Aboriginal Cultural Awareness training, which was conducted by the Catholic Education Office.

Catholic Performing Arts is in full swing and many of our students are participating. We wish them good luck. It is pleasing to see that there is an increased level of participation in the Music arena of recent times, after a Covid-affected slow start to the year.

We welcomed a group of students from Nagle Catholic College who completed the Camino Salvado walk from Subiaco to New Norcia, over the holidays.

In the first two weeks of term, we hosted a dozen very talented group of students, from Vietnam on an Immersion experience at the College. These students shadowed our young people and made excellent friendships in the time they were here.

PE/Sports Uniform

Unfortunately, some students are not following the College requirements regarding when they can wear their PE uniform and/or not changing at the appropriate times.

With the ongoing COVID situation we have allowed the Year 7-10 Students to wear their PE uniform all day on the days they have physical education.

Year 7-12 students who have subjects that may require them to change into PE/Sports uniform (e.g., Rugby & Netball) must wear their Academic uniform to and from school and get changed at the appropriate times, either at the beginning and end of the lesson or in the breaks either side lesson. Students who are found to be in the incorrect uniform at the incorrect time will be issued with afterschool detention.

If students are not sure of what is required, please speak to your PE teacher or Dean of Students.

Edith Cowan University (ECU) School of Engineering Awards

Congratulations to Matthew O'Loughlin - for achieving a grade over 80 at school and being the top student in ATAR Mathematics Methods.

Congratulations to Owen Buttigieg - for achieving a grade over 80 at school and being the top student in ATAR Physics.

Both Matthew and Owen received a certificate from ECU and a cash prize of $200.

City of Vincent Community Achievement Award- Keira MacAskill

As a student who attends a school in the City of Vincent, Keira was recognised for her outstanding efforts in her chosen sport, Rugby. Keira has excelled this year by representing the Western Force in the recent Super Rugby season.

The city recognised her outstanding performance and congratulates Keira for her efforts. 

Sporting Representation - National

Congratulations to Aranmore Head Girl Chelsea Te Whata who was selected for the U19s Australian Diamonds Softball team and played in the Canada Cup at the end of June. The team placed 5th out of 13 teams, only missing out on playing in the semi-finals by 2 points. 

Sporting Representation - State

Congratulations to the following students on their sporting success:

Olivia Wolmarans who competed in the State Heptathhlon team in Melbourne last holidays. Olivia was also selected into the State AFL 16s team where she was awarded MVP. Last Friday, Olivia flew to NSW with the State AFL 15s team. She was also named as one of the Leaders of this team.

Inneia Tangata who has been selected to represent WA in the 2022 Netball 12s Championships in Sydney in September.

Palace Koia who was selected into the state U12's Rugby AND Netball teams in late 2021. This April, she represented WA in the state Little Athletics team in Sydney where she won three national medals: Gold in the 4 x 100 relay, Silver in the discus and Bronze in the 80m hurdles.

Sapphire McLeod who has been selected to represent WA in the 2022 Netball 12s Championships in Sydney in September. Sapphire has been selected for both indoor and outdoor netball.

I am not biased when I say that Science is the best subject at Aranmore, where the most fun is to be had, and the most enthusiastic staff are to be found. But behind every great Science teacher is an equally impressive Lab Technician. For the past 8 years, Mr Daniel Stanes has been Aranmore’s excellent Lab Tech.

Mr Stanes performs the usual tasks of getting our experiments ready and keeping our chemicals stocked and safely stored, but he also does so much more. When we wanted to turn Aranmore into a Solar System to teach the students about astronomical distances, Mr Stanes made model planets. When we wanted a fun way to teach electrical circuits, he created a giant electrical coil, complete with a car horn if you touched the wire. Mr Stanes can whip up a batch of playdough, in multiple colours, individually portioned in no time at all so we can demonstrate Force. He has the patience to run Pre-Service teachers and new teachers through the best way to conduct experiments and the knowledge to streamline experienced teachers practices. I can confidently write that no Science teacher who has walked into the prep area and asked Mr Stanes for ideas on how to demonstrate a particular concept has ever walked away disappointed.

When the thought of 30 Year 7’s using Bunsen burners for the first time is too much for a teacher to bear alone, Mr Stanes is there. When we are teaching back-to-back and have forgotten an essential piece of equipment, Mr Stanes quietly gets the job done. When, for the life of us, we can’t remember how to connect the oscilloscope correctly or get the projector working, he has it working before the class gets off track. He is a favourite of the local butcher who ensures Aranmore is supplied with the best offal for dissection. His efficiency, level of cleanliness and organisation - which includes submitting purchase orders and invoices in a prompt manner, leave the rest of us in the department in disgrace.

As a true scientist Mr Stanes is big on reusing and recycling: batteries, milk bottle lids, soft plastics are all sorted and recycled. He has also repaired nearly everything in the science lab, most of the audiovisual equipment at Aranmore, countless student shoes, glasses and calculators. Even a sick goldfish is no match for Mr Stanes.

Now it is time for Mr Stanes to move on, and the Science staff are not the only people who will miss his quiet and efficient ways. Mr Stanes wears multiple Aranmore hats – often at the same time.

Mr Stanes is part of the IT department helping both students and parents, he works in the library, helps the music department and runs the audio-visual equipment for College events. Most people wouldn’t be aware of the mass of wires and equipment it takes for one Mass to be held in the CASS.

Year 9 Conduction

Year 9’s are testing the thermal conduction properties of different metals using a conduction ring. At the end of each plate of metal is a ball bearing attached to the plate using candle wax. The metal with the best thermal conduction will heat the wax causing the ball to drop first.

Year 9 Robotics

Year 9’s enjoyed another Stem United activity last week.  During this session they built a robot, including connecting the electrical components.  They then had to control the robot to get it to grasp and move an object.

The Innovators' Tea Party - Speed Networking

Target Audience: Year 10-12

This is a unique opportunity for students to meet with inspiring female role models working in Science, Technology, Engineering & Maths. Designed for students in years 10-12, they will speak 1-1 with a number of different Women in STEM about their day-to-day work and career pathway. Students will have a few minutes to talk to each mentor, learn about their career stories and ask questions, before moving onto the next.

Each session has a different theme and students are welcome to attend more than one session. The session themes are:

10:30am - 12:00pm : Creative Technology
12:30pm - 2:00pm : All STEM fields
2:30pm - 3:00pm : Medicine and Health Science
