Visit from Regional WA Students
A group of students from the Ngalangangpum school, from Warnum in Turkey Creek, visited the College with their teacher Georgie Major. They are in Perth for Catholic Performing Arts and some excursions.
It was their first time on a plane and the first time they have visited the city. They performed their dance for our students and presented us with a painting by one of the students, as a gift to the College.
Georgie Major will be returning to the College in 2023.
Colloquium
Dr Pina Ford conducted a Colloquium with our Staff, last Friday on the theme of “The Light Within”. This is an annual event for our staff where we have own reflection day, as do the students, when they have their Retreats.
Hollywood Bingo
We want to congratulate the Parents and Friends group, for a very entertaining evening. Lots of music, fun, dancing and prizes and a large number of parents attended. I would particularly like to thank the Parents and Friends, for such an outstanding job in putting this evening together. The money raised will go towards the outdoor gymnasium.
New Staff
We welcome Natalie Ter-Horst as our Home Economics Assistant and Ellen Jenkyn as a teacher in EALD.

Digital Inclusion Project - VOTE NOW
In early 2022, Aranmore Catholic College participated in CEWA’s Digital Inclusion Initiative, a year-long research study in which a sample group of digitally excluded students from three regional and metro CEWA schools were provided with access to technology to study the impact on learning.
The initiative was intended to help identify possible solutions to close the access to learning gap for students outside the classroom.
The year-long research study provides digitally excluded students with access to hardware and accessories (laptop, laptop bag), internet access at home, digital skills and cyber safety training, and support. Phoebe Bennett led the involvement of Aranmore Catholic College, coordinating translators, parents, students, teachers to contribute to the research conducted by Western Sydney University. The initiative will result in new partnerships being established between schools, NBN, Western Sydney University and other technology organisations involved to open the door for future opportunities to further advance digital inclusion for students and families.
The Digital Inclusion Project has been nominated in the CEWA QCE Awards. Below is the link for the QCE People’s Choice Awards. It’s been a massive group effort from several members of staff with the results of the study informing the national digital guidelines set by NBN. Hopefully meaning more digital access for disadvantaged families and students across Australia! Please take the time to vote for this project. Thank you.
English News
This week, the College joins in with many Australian schools to celebrate Book Week and we connect it to Aranmore’s English Week.
Please use the link CBCA to be inspired with lots of reading suggestions.
This year’s theme, Dreaming with eyes wide open encourages us all to use our imagination and notice our world.
We encourage all of our community members to promote books and reading! Reading books gives us many opportunities … to relax and learn - including developing empathy for others…reading a novel is a chance for us to “escape” and take a journey into a different place and time – an occasion to have a sustained imaginative experience.
Lots of activities happening for students and staff this week at our school including:
Spelling Bee Competition for students in Year 7 and 8 and in-house competitions for 50-word mini stories Haiku poetry.
Activities in the Library.
Staff are seeing who is the best at Wordle this week (Wordle - The New York Times (nyt.com)). It’s an engaging 5-word challenge available once a day, and our staff room is decorated with piles of books and a few blocks of Cadbury Dream bars with google eyes!
Have a great week and enjoy a good book.

Outstanding Award @ CPAF
Last week, the Aranmore Concert Band performed superbly at the Catholic Performing Arts Festival held at Sacred Heart College.
Our students brought their incredible energy, sense of fun and talent to the stage whilst representing the college with tremendous professionalism. They received a fantastic adjudicators report which highlighted their collective and individual talents and very significantly, received an Outstanding Award of achievement for their performance, which is the highest commendation possible. I could not be prouder of this band for their commitment and hard work which all paid off.

Year 8 Playdough molecules
Understanding chemical reactions is easier when you have a physical model in front of you.
Year 9 Combustion
The Year 9 Chemistry students are learning about endothermic and endothermic reactions. On Thursday, they had the opportunity to look at combustion and how different types of fuel burn. Due to the nature of this experiment, it must be completed outdoors and the outdoor sport courts were a perfect location while the sun was out.
Year 9 Light
The easiest way to understand how light behaves is to observe it. The Hobson light box allows students to make rays of light that they can observe travelling through a lens or reflecting off of a mirror.
Year 8 Marshmallow compounds
Last week, in Year 8 Science we had a competition to see which team could build the best sodium chloride lattice compound out of marshmallows and spaghetti! Students had fun eating their creations afterwards.
Year 9 Forensics Burning Fibres
Year 9 Forensic scientists are learning how to tell if a fibre is natural or artificial based on the way it responds when exposed to heat and flames.
Year 9 UV Radiation
Are all brands of sunscreen equally effective? Year 9 students are finding out using UV radiation meters.
SCIENCE WEEK - Structure Building
SCIENCE WEEK - Titration Demonstration
