Staff Colloquium

Each year the staff have a faith development day and this year we reconnected with our Christian Brothers tradition.

We had presentations by Richard Mavros from Aquinas, Br Terry Casey, from the Christian Brothers and Luke Alderslade, who is the coordinator of volunteers at Edmund Rice.  Luke spoke of the work of Edmund Rice schools and their Outreach programs and their tradition. The day was held at Aquinas College.

It was a very successful day and well received by staff.

Netball

I wish to congratulate our netball girls. Our Year 7’s and 8’s won the State schoolgirls netball championship, making them the best team in the state for their age division. This is a fantastic achievement.

Our senior girls competed in the final of the ACC Championship Schools and, unfortunately were beaten on the day, but they are to be congratulated for reaching this stage.

Catholic Performing Arts

Staff have been attending performances by our students at the Catholic Performing Arts festival.

I wish to acknowledge and congratulate the efforts of our students, who have done so well in their various performances.

"Upon this Rock: The Spiritual Significance of
‘You are Peter, and on this Rock, I will build my Church’
in Christianity." (Matthew 16:13-20)
(21^st Sunday of the Ordinary Time)

The phrase "You are Peter, and on this rock, I will build my Church" holds profound spiritual significance within Christianity, particularly in the Western tradition, where it has been a focal point of papal authority and the establishment of the Roman Catholic Church.

However, this declaration from Jesus also carries significant spiritual depth within Eastern Christianity, reflecting the unique theological perspectives and ecclesiastical structures of the Eastern Orthodox and Eastern Catholic Churches.

The passage originates from the Gospel of Matthew (16:18) in the New Testament, where Jesus speaks to the Apostle Peter after Peter confesses to him as the Messiah. This declaration serves as a foundation for the spiritual role of Peter as a leader among the apostles and the establishment of the Church.

In Christianity, the interpretation of the ‘rock’ upon which Christ will build His Church is deeply rooted in the early Church Fathers' writings and theological discussions. While acknowledging the importance of Peter's confession, the Eastern perspective emphasises the communal aspect of the Church rather than an individual's authority. The rock signifies the faith of the entire Church, with Peter representing not only himself but also the collective body of believers who hold steadfast to the teachings of Christ.

The Eastern and Western Churches strongly emphasise conciliarity, wherein decisions are made collectively through councils rather than a centralised authority. This perspective is reflected in the interpretation of the phrase, highlighting the significance of the entire Church community. The rock represents the faithful believers who, united in their faith, contribute to the Church's foundation and growth.

Christianity also stresses the importance of unity and harmony among the various local churches. The spiritual significance of Peter's role is seen in his function as a unifying figure rather than an authoritarian leader. This unity is deeply spiritual, reflecting the Spirituality and understanding of the Church as the mystical body of Christ in which all believers participate.

The concept of theosis, or divinisation, is central to Theology. It emphasises the transformative process of becoming one with God's divine nature. Peter's confession, recognising Jesus as Christ, aligns with this theology, as it signifies the acknowledgment of the divine presence and the path toward the thesis. Peter's role in the Church becomes a spiritual guide in this context, leading believers toward communion with the One Christ.

The Universal Church strongly emphasizes apostolic tradition, valuing the teachings and practices handed down from the apostles. Peter's confession and his role in the early Church establish a link between the apostolic era and the present, emphasising the continuity of faith throughout history.

In Christianity, the phrase "You are Peter, and on this rock, I will build my Church" transcends a mere proclamation of authority; it embodies a rich and multifaceted spiritual perspective. Rooted in communal faith, conciliarity, unity, and thesis, the interpretation emphasises the collective role of the faithful in building the Church. It echoes the timeless truth that the Church is a living, dynamic entity formed by its members' unifying faith and guided by Christ's teachings.

Congratulations to Olivia Wolmarans (Year 10) and Mia Pappas (Year 11), who have been chosen to represent the ACC girls’ team in this year’s All Stars AFL tri-series against the IGSSA and SSWA teams. To be selected as one of the 23 members of the team is a fantastic achievement and a credit to Olivia and Mia's dedication and skill to AFL.

Congratulations to Year 10 students Olivia Wolmarans, who represented WA in the U18s AFL! To be selected into an U18s team as a 15-year-old is an outstanding achievement - well done!

Student Success - Ryan & Neave

Congratulations to Year 12 students Neave Cunningham and Ryan Pryce, who received awards from the ECU School of Engineering.

Ryan received the ECU School of Engineering ATAR Physics Award for achieving the highest mark in Physics within the 2022 Year 11 cohort.

Neave received the ECU School of Engineering ATAR Mathematics Methods Award for achieving the highest mark in Mathematics Methods within the 2022 Year 11 cohort.

After two and a half years of proposals, fundraising, and planning, the second stage of the outdoor gymnasium has been finished - completing the project.

Located in between Marian Street and the ramp leading up to the library, the previously unused space has been transformed into a generous area for calisthenics training, and an additional zone with equipment for arm, leg and core exercise. 

Sincere thanks are in order to the following people:

- Joshua Lucano, Cameron Pryce, Lachlan Murphy, Lachlan Coates, Thomas McGregor and Marshall Honore for helping Miss Cerny with the initial concept, presenting a proposal to Mr Tanham and helping raise funds.

- Aimee-Grace Bartels, Chloe Ferraro, Laila Palmer, Patrick O'Loughlin, Xavier Southam and Milly Taylor (8 ACE class) for testing and selecting equipment for Stage Two.

- Mrs Hawes, Mr Tanham, Mr O'Brien, Mr Cooper, and Mrs Preshaw for their ongoing support and hard work to get this project completed.

- Andrea Murray and the Parents and Friends Association who generously funded the project, and everyone who attended P&F events to raise money.

- and to the team at Forpark for turning our ideas into a safe space for all of our students and staff to enjoy!

Outdoor Gym Project Leader

In June, students in Years 7 and 8 ACE competed in the Education Perfect Sustainable Oceans Competition as part of World Ocean Day.

The ACE students achieved 34^th overall in Australia out of 115 schools. The pictured students earned the most points for the class placing them in the top 2% of competitors from around the world; well done to Olaf Skrzypek, Ryan Kazandzis, and Callum O'Brien.

Media Students Learn the Art of Foley

Our Year 10 Media students have been learning the basics of sound editing. A huge part of screen production includes the interesting art of Foley: the creation and reproduction of sound effects that are later synced with video in movies in television. 

Students use lentils and beans to recreate the sound of rain, butter knives to simulate sword fights, and celery sticks to mimic cracking ice. As they learn the tricks of the cinematic trade, students can find a greater appreciation for the craft and use this knowledge to guide their own productions.

Science Week Paper Plane Competition

The annual highlight of Science Week! Congratulations to Mansur (pictured on the left) for winning first and second place and to Yohannes, who was awarded third place!

Year 8 Paper Plane Making

To get every advantage for the paper plane competition, Mrs Geoghegan’s Year 8 Science class spent a lesson researching what makes a good paper plane and how to make it. We then constructed our planes, trialled them and made improvements before the final competition.

Science Week Movies

Scinema is the largest science film festival in the Southern Hemisphere. Science teachers chose their favourite movies and screened them each lunchtime during Science Week.  Hot popcorn added to the movie theatre feel at Aranmore.

Year 7 - Adhesive Force Investigation 

In Science last week, we measured the adhesive force of different types of sticky tape. We got a piece of string and cut a bit of tape and stuck it under the table. Then we tied weights to the end and measured how much weight it could hold. We then recorded the results and found out which tape had the most adhesive force. It was really fun having a look at how much weight some of the tapes could hold. - Cooper Troung

Year 9 Convection Snakes

Convection is a form of heat transfer that occurs due to changing density as gases and liquid are heated. While students can’t see the air rising on top of their candle, they can see the effects as it causes their alfoil snake to spiral.
