This year we have been focusing on Aranmore’s Vision for Learning. We believe that everyone Belongs at Aranmore and acknowledge each student’s individual Journey.
During Harmony Week last term, Temi Idowu, a Year 12 student from Nigeria, and Lalirra Dane, a Year 10 student of Aboriginal and Māori heritage, spoke at an assembly about their journeys and how they feel they belong at Aranmore.
Over the next few weeks, we will be sharing other students’ stories.
Zohreh Sharifi - Year 11
Zohreh’s family is from Afghanistan, however, she was born in Iran where she lived for sixteen years. Zohreh loved the people of Iran – she found them to be very happy and helpful. She said that Iran was a lovely place to live; she enjoyed music and going to school. School in Iran is quite different to Australian schools. Girls and boys do not attend school together. When she was in Primary School, on one week, Zohreh would attend school from 8:45 until 12:45pm and have the afternoon off. Boys would start school at 1pm and finish at 5. The following week they would switch times. So, boys and girls shared the same school but attend at different times of the day. Zohreh then went to an all-girls Secondary School.
Zohreh arrived in Australia in May 2021. Her father came out ten years earlier to work and save up money to bring his family over. Zohreh has lots of relatives in Perth and she loves living her.
When she started at Aranmore, Zohreh spent six months in IEC1 and twelve months in IEC 2. She is now in mainstream. Zohreh’s favourite subject is English. The hardest part about mainstream is the language. At times it’s a little difficult to follow what the teachers are saying, but Zohreh finds the students and staff at Aranmore very welcoming and hospitable. She describes Miss Phong as a very special teacher who listens to her, is accepting of her and helps Zohreh feel that she belongs. She is very happy here at Aranmore.

Students are required to:
1. Be present at least 20 minutes prior to the scheduled start time of an examination.
2. Be in full College uniform.

Year 12 Physics Mini Motors
In Physics, we are learning about electromagnetism. It is quite interesting because current creates a magnetic field around it but a change in magnetic field (flux) will induce a current which is the building block for how we create electricity. - Owen Young & Ryan Pryce
Year 8 Onion Cells
As part of their study of Biology, Year 8 students had the opportunity to observe onion cells under the microscope. If they managed to prepare a thin enough sample with the right amount of dye, they were able to view the organelles they have been learning about in class.

Science is a part practical subject. To reflect this some of our assessments have practical components. In these images, Year 8’s are being tested on their microscope skills by Mr Eglington and our Lab Technician, Biji.

Year 7 Solubility
Year 7s have created their own scientific experiment to determine if sugar or salt is more soluble in water. They had to be careful to control all of their variables to get an accurate result.

Stem Smart
A fortnight ago, Year 9’s took part in a drone challenge. This week they have learned how to code the drones and how technology like this is useful in the real world. This is a great opportunity for our students to learn about careers they may otherwise not hear about.

IEC ART - Ukrainian Easter Egg Workshop
Considering the high number of Ukranian students we have now, it seemed only appropriate and inclusive to run a workshop on the intricate and beautiful art of Ukranian Easter Eggs.
Using hot wax and dyes, the students decorated their eggs with layers (no pun intended) of detailed patterns and symbols that embody the meaning of the Easter message; one of life, birth and joy.
Many thanks to the amazing Mrs Claire Drabble who organised her Godmother Helen to come in and demonstrate the subtle techniques. Helen, who came to Australia from Ukraine as a child in the turmoil of World War 2, has made hundreds of eggs, each one taking hours of careful devotion. She was so talented, and the students were silently awed as she drew skilfully out her designs. It was my quietest lesson!
I look forward to continuing this wonderful tradition at Aranmore next year, hopefully extending it beyond the IEC Art program.
We are all truly appreciative of Helen's time.
