The College has been particularly busy, as there were a considerable number of late enrolments, and so we welcome new families to our community.

As well as new Year 7 families, there were 75 new families with students in Years 8-12 enrolled at the College. I look forward to seeing you at the New Families Information Night and Sundowner on Wednesday 15 February.

Staff
We welcome the return of Georgie Major, Adam Miotti and Kate Campbell and the following new staff who have joined us:
Jamie Florence - Art Design and Technology Technician

Janelle Di Marco - Maths Teacher
William Linter - Education Assistant
Victoria Tan - Education Assistant
Carolina Zanlongo - Education Assistant
Barbara Keelan - Library Officer
Daniel O’Loughlin Admin – Ministry
Seb Eglington - Humanities

We trust that their time working with our students will be fruitful.

Student Results
We were delighted with our student results in 2022. There were 8 students who scored in the 90’s.

We particularly acknowledge the performances of Owen Buttigieg, Sophie Rowse and Matthew O’Loughlin who achieved an ATAR over 95, with Owen and Sophie both achieving 98.65.

English News

Welcome to a new year with many opportunities for learning, sharing, and growing. This year’s Children Book Council of Australia Book Week theme Read ,Grow, Inspire [ CBCA ] is worth adopting for the whole year. We trust that there will lots of reading for pleasure, growth and inspirational moments for everyone.

Our English team for this year includes Mrs Kate Campbell, Miss Ruby-Jean Hindley, Mrs Kerry Ponton, Ms Janine Robert, Ms Andrea Sorba, Mr Mat Tchan, Ms Casey Vinci and for the first few weeks of Term One, Mr Frank Egan and Mrs Mel Tang. All of us are keen to get to know our students and enjoy our teaching and learning programs -with lots of reading, writing, viewing, speaking and listening both in and outside our English classrooms.

We look forward to all our students coming to class ready to learn with positive attitudes and all the appropriate equipment. All students in English classes must bring an exercise book to class which will be used as a Writing Journal. Teachers will direct the type of entries and the work should be formative to assist students in improving their skills.

We encourage all students to review work covered in class, to read widely and to seek help if needed. It is also important that students keep all their work, including drafts and notes, for the duration of the academic year.

We have an ongoing relationship with the Literature Centre in Fremantle (thelitcentre.org.au) and this year have incursions booked for Year 8 and Year 10 students. We also invite interested students to consider attending the Young Writers Collective workshops which are held at the Literature Centre in Fremantle once a term. We have a limited number of places available for some of our Year 8, 9 and 10 students. If students are keen on reading and writing and this opportunity appeals to them, they should speak to their English teacher or Mrs Dennis for more details. The first workshops are in early March.

It is wonderful to be part of the Aranmore community and we are grateful for the ongoing support of our colleagues and families.

Let’s have a great year together!

Library News

A new year of engagement, activity and - best of all - reading has begun!

Welcome to our new full-time Library Officer, Mrs Barbara Keelan.  We would also like to thank our previous staff members, Miss Rira Tipene-Grace and Ms Vicki Pratt, for their contributions to the running of the library during 2022.

Library staff are looking forward to assisting students and staff to explore, collaborate and create.  The Children’s Book Council of Australia’s 2023 theme of ‘Read Grow Inspire’ seems fitting, not just for Book Week, but for our hopes for the year in the J.F. Moloney Library.

Science News

Year 8 Energy in Food

Making links between science concepts and every day life is important. Here Year 8 students are learning to read nutrition labels and looking at the energy found in common foods.

Year 8 Reading

Each day Year 7 & 8 students are given time to enjoy silent reading. In science, we have a selection of books in each room for students to choose from or students are welcome to bring their own.

Year 8 Creepy Crawlies

Year 8’s have begun their year studying physics and looking at energy. They have made little creepy crawlies to demonstrate energy transformation.

Year 9 Balloons

We begin year 9 Chemistry with some revision of subatomic particles. Rubbing balloons in their hair to make it stand on end is a fun reminder of their charges.

Year 12 Chemistry – Extent of Chemical Reactions

The year 12 Chemistry students were looking at the extent of a chemical reaction, or how far a chemical reaction proceeds before reaching equilibrium, by noting the colour change of solutions.

ViSN News

The Year 11 ViSN students attended the ViSN Camp at UWA, St Thomas More College from Thursday afternoon to Saturday morning. It was a chance to meet their ViSN teachers, and classmates, and begin their lessons in person.

It was a busy time; five lessons with their teacher, a OneNote escape room activity, a guest speaker, a workshop on the transition to Year 11, ex-students talk, recreation activities, and experiencing general dorm life.

Thank you to Mark, our trusty driver and to the ViSN teachers who attended the camp and assisted in the supervision of Aranmore students.
