I was delighted to attend The School of Rock musical, performed by our students. It was brilliant. 

I would particularly like to congratulate Shelley Dice and all the Staff who contributed to the show and thank them for their expertise.

National Catholic Education Commission Conference

I attended this conference in Melbourne last week, after a number of postponements. The conference gathers school leaders from all over Australia as well as church leaders. I must say I particularly enjoyed being at St Patrick’s Cathedral in Melbourne, to celebrate a High Mass, with all the trimmings.

The theme of the conference was very much centred around Reflecting upon the mission of the church and its schools, and endeavouring to be faithful and authentic in what we do.

It was also an excellent time to gather with colleagues from all over the country and to hear their stories and challenges.

Semester 2 Examinations – Year 12 Students

The Semester 2 Examinations, sometimes referred to as the “mock” exams, are almost upon us for our Year 12 students.

• Monday 19 Sep to Wed 21 Sep – Year 12 ViSN Examinations.
  This is during the final week of Term 3 and students are expected to attend classes when not undertaking an examination.
• Monday 3 Oct to Monday 10 Oct – Year 12 ATAR Examinations.
  These examinations are during the second week of the school holidays and the first Monday of Term 4 (a staff professional learning day i.e., no pupils)

Normal school rules apply for students when at school and when travelling to and from school. Students are required to:

• Be present at least 20 minutes prior to the scheduled start time of an examination.
• Be in full College uniform.

The examination schedule (together with instructions) is attached and posted in SEQTA. A personalised examination timetable has been distributed to each student undertaking an examination (it does not include VisN courses).

Students should be studying in preparation for these upcoming examinations as they are designed to reflect the end of year WACE examinations which begin the first week of November. I wish all of them the best for these upcoming examinations.

Lost something? Please visit Student Services to see if your missing item has made its way to Student Services Lost Property Collection. A box containing unclaimed and unnamed Sportswear will be in the CASS for students to come and claim any lost items for the next two weeks only. 

Student Services has a number of unclaimed shoes and sporting clothing.

Caritas Australia is taking its Make Hunger History campaign to parishes and schools across Australia to raise funds for its Africa Food Crisis Appeal.

Aranmore is helping to raise funds by doing a Sausage Sizzle Fundraiser on Tuesday 13 September.

The funds raised will provide urgently needed humanitarian aid to countries in the Horn of Africa, including Ethiopia, Kenya, South Sudan, Somalia and Eritrea.

Students and staff were kept busy with a range of activities to celebrate The Children’s Book Council of Australia Book Week and English Week, which ran concurrently during Week 6 of term. 

The CBCA 2022 theme, Dreaming with eyes open… was recognised in a display in the JF Moloney Library and also via colouring sheets available for those wanting to exercise their creativity. Library visitors were able to complete a quiz, identifying the titles from which a selection of maps originated. Students seen reading for pleasure in the library had the opportunity to win a book voucher, with Chloe Wintergreene the successful reader.

English Week was celebrated around the school in a variety of ways. Students participated in a range of activities, including a Year 7 and 8 spelling bee.

One of the many English Week activities included students participating in the Prime Minister’s Spelling Bee! We had 10 students participate in the ‘School Round’, with two students going through to the ‘State Finals’ – spelling words many of us English teachers had never even heard of! Congratulations to all who participated, and our two state finalists, Mohammad Sharifi (IEC 2) and Caylan Richards (Year 7). – Ms Annie Dziadulewicz

Students were also given to opportunity to enjoy creative writing, focusing on poetry and mini-stories.

A very competitive field of staff members advised Mrs Ponton of their Wordle scores each day.  Ms Oakes emerged as the Wordle Wiz, with Ms Donaldson a worthy runner-up.  During the week, some staff also came in “dreamy” or book-themed costumes to share morning tea in our staff room decorated thematically with lots of books.

On Friday 2 September the cast, musicians and backstage crew took to the stage to perform in our School of Rock Showcase.

The students showed their commitment to see the showcase to completion in the face of many significant challenges, from a change in director to the postponing of rehearsals due to COVID and eventually the dramatic reshaping of the performance. The student’s dedication, passion and enthusiasm, however, never wavered and led to their incredible performance on Friday night! I admire them for this and hope they are as proud of their performance as I am!

Congratulations to Aimee Grace Bartels and Caylan Richards who took part in the 2022 CLTAWA State Mandarin Competition. Aimee took part in the writing competition and Caylan took part in the speaking competition. - Mrs Emily Tan, Mandarin Teacher

The Aranfest Music Showcase is almost here! Come along on Tuesday 13 September and be entertained from 5:30pm - 7:30pm by performances from Jazz Combo, ACC Rock Band, Choir, Concert band, Class Bands, Flute, Saxophone and Brass Ensembles. Light refreshments will be served.

Year 9 Momentum

As part of the Einstein First project Dr Carroll’s class are modelling the momentum of a photon.

Year 8 Chemical Change

The Year 8s are learning about physical and chemical change in Science. Last week they had the opportunity to see both in action by mixing vinegar with milk and seeing how copper sulphate reacts to steel wool. This experiment prepares them for their next practical science assessment in Week 8. – Miss Casey Donaldson

Year 11 Human Biology ATAR - Midwife Visit

The Year 11 Human Biology courses recently had a visit from trainee midwife Bethany Geoghegan.  She spoke about pregnancy, birth and the newborn.  She also covered the various study pathways students could follow to become a midwife.  Students were fascinated by her presentation, especially using a balloon and ping pong ball to demonstrate dilation of the cervix during labour.

Year 11 Physics – Sound

Year 11 Physics students can be seen here using tuning forks and PVC piping to measure the speed of sound.

Examining Skulls 12 Human Biology

Aranmore’s collection of Hominid skulls allows students to see the trends in the evolution of primates in general and humans in particular.

Year 12 Human Biology zoo excursion.

I could not have been more proud of our Human Biology students at the zoo this year. They behaved perfectly as expected but really shined during the lecture when they were able to answer all the lecturer’s questions. They were able to order the primate skulls using the points and skills taught during class, and even the lecturer commented on the depth of their knowledge. To top it off the weather was the best we have had for this annual excursion in quite a few years.  Well done – I am looking forward to seeing how well you perform in your upcoming exams.
